Using Safety Glass For Shower Doors
Have you ever wondered what would happen if you walked into your shower door or somehow caused the glass to break? This is actually a fairly common question and concern from people looking to upgrade their bathrooms. While it is extremely unlikely you would ever break a shower door or shower enclosure, that is why we recommend using safety glass (often called tempered glass) for your shower.
Tempered glass is the same type of glass used in car windows. Not only is this glass extremely strong and difficult to break, but if it does break it turns into thousands of small pieces instead of sharp edged shards of glass. In the unlikely event that you shatter tempered glass these small shards protect people and animals from getting cut and make it much safer to cleanup the broken glass.
To ensure the safety of your glass shower door, you should take the following precautions:
- Keep all hardware firmly tightened.
- Make sure all bumpers are installed per instructions.
- Avoid slamming the doors (be sure to tell the kids!).
- Never put excessive weight on the knobs or towel bars (again, tell the kids!).
- If the glass drags or does not close without touching anything, have the shower door adjusted immediately.
- Routinely check the door(s) to ensure everything is functioning as intended.
